Check the ground on the alternator although it should have direct, metal to
metal, contact on the engine bracket mounting that should be connected back
to battery ground. Just finished a major alternator replacement on my '93
Saab that quit charging on a road trip and, after 20 years, decided to make
the change. Still had charging problems with the new one and, after adding
a new ground wire, I now have 14 volts, with the engine running, at the
battery. Same problem years ago with a Volvo 240 who also uses a rubber
grommet on the alternator to reduce vibration but I guess I didn't check
the simple things that can cause major problems.
