I got a proper alternator  belt - finally - for my toad.  After replacing all the hoses and belts and the water outlet housing (it is plastic, the original one had cracked). Put the slow charger on my (new) battery and got it up to full.  Hit the switch, grunk - but no dim of the interior lights.  Clean connections, good ground, 12 on the solenoid contact.  So, the electric self-commencer has expired.  It's a gear reduction drive on VW Diesels, with 3 planetary gears around the output shaft, and an external bushing in the bell hounsing which I'll also replace.  Removing the unit means removing the motor mount bolts.  Sigh.  I've had VWs for many decades - air cooled and water cooled, gas and Diesel.  This one has been a bigger pain than the rest combined.  I'd dump it except it tows beautifully, burns almost no fuel even when it is running, and I like the handling.  And it's paid for.The saga continues.
