While at the GMCDL rally in Colquitt, GA a couple of weeks ago, we got a
lead on possible entertainment for GMCMI Dothan next March: One of the Cub
Scouts for whom SHE was Cub Master in 1968/9 is a member of a comedy trio.
He and the two other Colquitt residents, whom we've also known for years,
were associated with "Swamp Gravy", the folk play which was the highlight
of the rally. But they're now performing independently. Last night we
attended their premier performance, at the GRAND Olive Theater <
http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/34197> in the metropolis of
Donaldsonville, GA (pop. 2796). The theater was packed -- all 350 seats!

The performance by the "Dirt Road Sports" <http://www.dirtroadsports.com/>
was hilarious. From the 6 yo girl seated beside me, to several folks who
made me look young, 'most everyone was practically rolling in the aisles.
It was almost like having 3 South Georgia redneck Red Skeltons talking
directly to us for two hours. The "plot" was the recounting of seemingly
true tales about their relatives, pastors, and local characters and
locations. Primarily addressing long-past events, they provoked
long-buried memories of such things as RC Colas and Moon Pies, country
preachers, and outhouses in the house. Knowing the area as I do, I suspect
most of the tales were basically true and only slightly embellished. But
the manner of their presentation was at least the equal of most of Red's
work.

Periodically during the performance, 8 local singers sang solos for us. It
was astounding to see such talent displayed in such humble surroundings.
I'm still amazed that they've managed to find so much stage-comfortable
and superbly performing young people in Colquitt (pop. 2000) and
surrounding communities.

The Dirt Road Sports weren't always strictly "politically correct", and
were unabashedly patriotic, but their humor was always clean, sincere, and
impossible to ignore. I'm sure every GMCer would enjoy it enormously.

We don't yet know what it will take to get them to perform for us at GMCMI
Dothan, but I sincerely hope we can find a way to have them there.
