John came over today-from Humble to Houston-about a 30 minute drive, to help on my GMC motorhome. A little background- -I had to remove the aluminum intake manifold because it leaked oil everywhere on the last trip to Patterson, LA in 2011. I got it all back together, except for removing the oil everywhere as my pressure washer was stolen-another story. However, no matter what I did, I could not get the coach to start. While I thought it was a timing issue, I just could not fix it. Three months later, I got the nerve to call John.
It is almost embarrassing to ask him for help as he has been there every time I need him. Did you know he also tends to his wife who has MS and is in a wheel chair?
Within an hour, John had it running. I had remembered to take my timing light but forget the aux battery I had been charging in my garage at home. Fortunately, I still had a charger at the old shop where the coach is and we used that to charge up the coach btry to where it would spin the engine. I offered him one of the new center console boxes I am having made for Amana but he declined. I have given John a few things and sold him a few but this man just keeps giving and I want to acknowledge that to all of you. John taught high school automotive shop and besides that, he is just plain smart about GMC stuff. I am not a mechanic, do not claim to be one, but I enjoy working on the GMC.
Because of so much maintenance and declining ability, we recently bought a 2002 Some Other Brand having only 14,000 miles, but that was a mistake. After we replace the A/C compressor, we hope to bring it to Amana, bring it home and sell it. I am now convinced that (a)Sitting for long periods is not good for a motorhome and (b) The GMC motorhome, properly repaired and maintained, is almost perfect. We intend to switch to our #2 GMC, the '76 Edgemonte after the SOB is gone, but also to sell the #1 GMC, a '74 Eleganze, having invested over $30k over 10 years for which we have all the receipts. It will be a great coach for someone-we just prefer the Edgemonte floorplan and the remodeled interior by the PO.
Just say hello to John the next time you see him knowing he truly is one of us GMCers.
