We recently had issues with water (condensate) dripping from the controls of our Carrier Low Profile.
Summary: Clean the filters before you do a lot of work......
I was up on the roof with the cover off numerous times and was sure I had found and cured the issue, until the next time we turned it on.... There were no insect nest or drains plugged.
When I ran it with the inside cover down, I could never see anything. I could not even tell where condensate might be leaking in.
When I ran the unit with the cold side open and watched from the top, there was no hint what the problem was. My knees got wet.
Again, running and removing covers... I pulled down the inside an saw a single drop come down through the return air opening. "What the ??"
Again on the roof with all the covers off and nothing misbehaving, but then I noticed that the top of the cold air duct was wet - very wet - where it runs under the return. Snap, snap, screw, screw put it back together again - can you tell this is getting old?
Back inside. It is now about 110° (no joke) inside the coach, so I am going to run the A/C and strategically place a bucket. As I put up the inside cover, I saw more drips as the cover got sucked to the overhead (headliner). There are two filters that slide in - one along each edge. I pulled them both out.
Two things were immediately obvious. The filters were much dirtier than I have ever seen, and the cover is now harder to hold up for reinstallation. Apparently clogged air filters will really mess up everything... I blew the filters clean and put them back in. My bucket never saw a drop.
On the Carrier Low Profile (I cannot speak for others), the evaporator (and therefore the drains) are on the up stream side of the the blower. So, when the the filters get restricted, the pressure may prevent the drains from draining at the required rate and then the messed up airflow inside the case can cause condensate running of the condenser to splash out the return air.
The inlet filters get cleaned every spring, but this year's heat has caused us to us the A/C much more than in any past year.
It is important to learn from others - particularly their mistakes. It is also a lot cheaper to do it that way.
