Just putting my 2 cents in. Take it for what it's worth. My mechanical fuel pump was still good, but I replaced it anyway. I figured it was probably weak. Plus, newer pumps use more ethanol-resistant materials than the originals, so I figured that replacing it put me ahead of the game.It meant one less thing to be wrong. I also rebuilt my carb with a new kit which also has more ethanol resistance. The carb turned out to be the problem. Every gasket in it was shrunken & bad. I ran it from a boat tank the 30 miles from our old place to the new.with absolutely no problems. Running the removable tank also negated the bad fuel problem, since I removed the tank when I got here & burned the gas in the lawn mower that was left over. Now all I have to do is find a pump to attach to the stock fuel line & pump out any gas remaining in the tank & replace the lines someday.
