'74 body side molding rub strip removal [message #175771]

How do you get the body side molding rub strip, the black part, off of a 1974? It appears to be held on by a metal retainer strip and if I attempt to pull it off it starts to bend the retainer strip. Does it slide off (forwards or backwards) or is there another trick?
