Just ignore the grey wire. Put some electrical tape on the end so it doesn't short against anything, and push it out of the way.

What you described (the dash lights lighting) is normal. It doesn't indicate a malfunction. It's just a wire that you don't need. It was used to light the little dial on older radios, but newer radios don't use it.
