My wife and I set out for a weekend at the beach. Our 1st outing in the GMC. The temperature that day was around 90. The dash AC doesn't put out much so, I had read on the forum about running the Onan while driving to power the roof AC was ok. My Onan is a 6k and has always run perfect. About 30 minutes into the drive, I stopped at a light and I look in my rear view mirror and OMG, the guy behind me is buried in smoke comining from the Onan. My wife jumped up and shut it down. I drove into a parking lot and jumped out with a Fire Extinguisher expecting a full blown weeny roast. Nothing.
The Onan was burning oil out the exhaust. Ok, must have lost a ring or a valve. We went on to the camp ground and had a nice weekend. When we got home, I pulled the Onan drawer out and fired it up. It puffed a little smoke for maybe 30sec then nothing. Ran perfect, no noise or any sign of a problem mechanically. It was a half a quart low. I guess bouncing around driving threw oil up into the piston? Scarred the wife pretty bad. Not Cool
