After finishing the Space and Rocket Museum tour at Huntsville, AL
yesterday, the two grandsons and I agree that we'd ride 'til nearly dark.
That put us in Heflin, AL for the night. This morning when they finally
woke up, we headed on home. I had a surprise for them: we stopped for
lunch at Gadsden Airport, near Griffin, GA where the Barnstormer Grille has
GREAT food. Their surprise was when the pilot came to our table during the
meal to ask if they wanted to go for a ride in the bright red Waco biplane
we'd seen in the museum next door. They didn't hesitate for a moment! :-)

Quite a thrill for the two of them strapped in the front cockpit for the
ride around the area. I didn't time it, but it was probably a total of
about 30 minutes. Well worth the $150 it cost me to see the big grins on
their faces when they got back.

GMC content: I've been thinking my steering was pretty tight -- maybe 1/2"
of free play at the steering wheel rim, most of it apparently from the
Grant quick-release mechanism for the wheel. Last week's reported steering
column tear down was primarily because of the fact that my shift lever
detents were not working well -- I was having trouble finding them and with
reaching full travel of the input lever on the new Manny Tranny. Well, let
me tell you, after 800 miles, the work I did on the column was more than
worth it -- ALL of that free play is gone! Since the only steering
component I replaced was the nylon pivot ball, I can only assume there was
more freedom in the original than I figured. The reason I replaced it with
the one from the Seminar Column is that the latter was still a more natural
color than the old brownish one. I'll be much more inclined now to
recommend that people rework their columns. With the little 0.75" ID x
1.25" spacer I mentioned earlier, replacing the pivot ball would really not
be very difficult. We need to check out sources for new ones.
