I replaced a donut (again!) recently to try to fix an exhaust leak.
By using a piece of tubing to listen, I found that the rounded
side of the donut sealed fine, but the flat shoulder side
was leaking like crazy no matter how much I cranked down the
exhaust bolts/springs.
I pulled the donut back out and slathered the exterior with
"exhaust system joint & crack sealer" -- it's a whitish paste
that comes in a tube. The stuff I have was made by VersaChem.
Put the donut back in and smooth out the paste around the
edges where you can reach with your finger (wear rubber gloves).
Let it dry before starting the engine or it may
push out from the pressure of the exhaust and mess up
the seal. I didn't remove the manifold to do this -- just
pulled the exhaust tube back enough to fit in the donut.
I don't know how pros do this, but the paste seems to have
fixed that particular leak so far. Now I just have to
find/fix all the other ones...
hope this helps
