Hi Richard,
Voice Over Internet Protocol has been around for quite a while. It works really well if you have a very fast, reliable internet service, ideally something up in the 5mb down or faster range. On slower connections you may experience frequent drop outs or dropped calls. Good for home based use if you have the fast internet, but likely not ideal when on the road and connecting through a variety of internet sources or slower 3g cell phone towers. faxing, VoIP etc.
Works with iphone and Android too.
