I was surprised that the Army sent two active duty soldiers in what I call full dress uniform. The funeral was for a 74 year old that was a draftee and did nothing extraordinary during his service. He was in for 2 years in the peace time pre-Vietnam US Army. I talked to the two Sargents (an e-5 and an E-6) both with combat infantry badges and asked where they were stationed. They both were stationed locally and all they do is attend funerals for ex-army people. It turns out that they are dispatched out of Fort Knox but are stationed locally at sites around the country.
I was impressed that the US Army bothered to do this.
The funeral attendees, especially the family, really appreciated their participation.
