I plan on keeping thieves from breaking in after we've moved in simply by being at home a lot & carrying my Taurus PT-111 at all times. I seldom go anywhere, anyway.
My wife's aunt once found a baby bobcat abandoned after it's mother was killed & raised it with all the necessary permits. She had signs posted about dangerous animals in her house, but once a thief just had to try. The bobcat, fully grown by this time, was in it's favorite spot on top of the fridge when the thief broke in. When she got home, the thief was cowering behind a couch where the cat had him treed. He required a lot of stitches, but was glad when the deputies arrived. It didn't take long for word to get around that their house wasn't a good place to get things for free. Bobcats can be house-broken, but aren't fond of strangers. They also have a tendency to get much bigger in captivity than in the wild. Even her Rottweilers gave the cat a wide berth when she was put in the outdoor enclosure with them.
Sometimes it's good to think outside the box...
