I was curious about the gear drives, so I called someone I know who builds race engines & asked him. He told me that the gear drives were more accurate, but that was not the primary reason they used it. Speed was. The engines he built were 389 & 401 engines with dry sump, external water pumps with reverse cooling, & crank-triggered ignition. They have a 2-piece timing cover & use straight-cut gears. He said that some racers routinely use different cams for different tracks & the gear drive made swapping cams dead simple & fast. He did say that even with angled gears that a cam locator button was required. As far as the noise, he said that with open exhaust cam gear noise couldn't be heard, or much else for that matter. He told me that a quality double-roller chain was much more dependable over the long haul, since getting oil to the gear axles would be a worry at long time use. He did stress that getting a top-quality cam chain set was a no-brainer. Too
many things could go wrong to save a few bucks there. He has also built a few puller truck engines that have to be dependable over all else. As far as he was concerned, nothing less than the best available was worth considering. ARP bolts throughout, etc.Roller cams were always used unless rules didn't allow them. His build room made some operating rooms look dirty. In his business, reputation is everything. This is something Manny & the Jims can agree with.
Just my 2 cents, adjusted for the economy...
