It seems the rebuilt CV joint situation is not yet as bad as I feared.

On Monday I ordered two 76 Olds CV axles from O'Reilly's and 5 from Advance
Auto, in each case after having shown the managers photos of OEM and non-OEM
CV joints and advised them that I'd accept only the former. They are both
enthusiastic co-conspirators in my scheme to stockpile CV joint. :-)

On Tuesday, the two axles arrived at O'Reilly's; one of them was correct. I
took that one home and installed it; the other is I know not where, but they
ordered two more. This morning, I returned the core and collected the
second two axles which, believe it or not, were BOTH correct. I've swapped
a set of old CV joints onto the short axle, stored the rebuilt ones, and
will claim my $30 core charge tomorrow. With no more old joints, I'll have
to eat the core charge on the other. That's 3 for 4 for O'Reilly's!

Today I picked up the one good axle of the two that arrived at Advance Auto.
The other 3 are still pending. I'll have to eat the core charge on any
that are good there, but they only charge $19. :-)

With 3 spares on hand and expectations of up to 3 more arriving, I'm in a
position to offer help to anyone who needs CV joints. Anyone who's
desparate, and attending Goshen or Milan, get in touch with me.

While the 1T front end upgrade will free up a few OEM CV joints, it's
inevitable that they're going to become scarce. I'm sure someone will
eventually manufacture longer axles for us to use with the new CV joints.
In the meantime, I think we should collect at least a few of the surviving
OEM joints. I'm doing my part. :-)

Ken H.
