I've had good luck with 3 programs. 2 are on all the time, 1 downloaded & used once a month or so. The 2 I keep on mine are Spybot: Search & Destroy and Spyware Blaster. Spyware Blaster is a blocker to stop things from getting in & Spybot is run on a regular basis to get what the other might miss. Both should be updated frequently. The 3rd is Avert Stinger by McAffee. It's a stand-alone remover that is updated frequently, so it needs to be re-downloaded around once a month. The first 2 are available at Majorgeeks.com. These & a good AV have kept me pretty much virus free for years.
BTW, all 3 are free...
