I am a Life Member of ASHRAE (American Society for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers) and as such get their monthly Journal. This month there was a short article copied from "Supermarket News" which may be of interest to this group. I quote it verbatim.

" Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market is planning a test of self contained coffin freezer cases using propane gas in a store expected to open in June.

Coffin freezers are plug in cases that are separated from main refrigeration systems. Most of Fresh and Easy's 160 stores have five coffin cases.

The company says the reasons for the test are that propane is more efficient than R404a and has a global warming potential of 3 compared to 3500 GWP of R 404a. In addition, propane costs $2 a pound while R404a costs $10, and 4.5 oz of propane can replace 9 oz of R404a.

Last May, EPA proposed a rule to make propane acceptable and a final rule, expected later this year, could increase the use of hydrocarbon appliances in the U.S."

Could some sanity be restored to this issue? Of course, it might just make it so it can be regulated further, and make do it yourself uses like ours illegal.

I hope not and also hope that does not sound to negative. R12a may have life yet.

I will report on anything I see as it comes up.
