I've seen a ring that goes between the lugnuts & wheel on some 1-ton trucks. The ring allows cone lug nuts to be used on wheels that do not have recesses(tapered lug holes). With the flat backed lug nuts we use, the adapter ring isn't needed. The ring clamps the wheel to the hub, if I recall. It allows an outside dual to be used on the front by removing the outside dual, spinning it around, and putting it on the front. Some 1-tons don't carry a spare. This is only for trucks that use tapered lugnuts.
