FI systems have many components, mostly electronics including lots of info to watch on a computer as you drive...hmmm!
Many GMCers swear by these systems-some have had problems.
Dick Paterson prefers carburators and that's good enough for me.
The Sanden comprssor is not as powerful as the AC Delco A6 we now have, but it saves about 30 pounds of weight in brackets as it uses fewer and smaller brackets. I was hoping for much better cooling, but such is not the case.
I will stick with the carb and the A6 for now. I did not discover enough reasons to change as I was looking for more benefits than I heard about. Justifying the higher cost of FI was not outweighed by the benefit of vapor locking less likely, easier start ups, etc.
Now, the "techies" that I know (John Sharpe, et al) make installation, etc. sound so easy, but I know from fooling with this GMC for 7 years, lots of stuff ain't so easy, especially diagnosing problems if one is not a trained mechanic or electrical/electronic engineer. While I now know a lot, when something goes wrong, I am often at a loss as to why and what happened. If it does not stop, I can fix the brakes, but if electronic widget goes off, I would not have a clue.
This message is mainly for those who are either new to the GMC or wonder whether they should go for all the upgrade gadgets that are out there and now there are many. A friend bought and installed a Cadillac engine only to find it did not work properly so he had to uninstall it and put his original engine back in. I, too, am a vendor and I don't want to hurt anyone's sales, but be sure you want something before investing in it.
FI works fine in my truck and car but I just don't see the cost/benefit ratio as worthwhile for the GMC. I am sure there are those with opposing views which are valid.
I am a (Springfield Ignition)Dick Paterson/Dave Lensi guy and I believe anything they tell me. I want their products when I "build" the GMC Edgemonte because they are bullet proof and reliability should always be our number one consideration. Michael at GEMRECS
