Thanks to all for the suggestions.
The belt was not slipping and I found no chafed wires.

The plug-in wire connector on the alternator felt a little loose.
I reseated it and took a 30 mile check ride. No fluctuating ampmeter. So I think I got away cheap.

Will spray contact cleaner help in this situation?
