Larry I recently found I had a starter problem. I purchased a new battery
with a lot of cranking amps and it would still barely turn over I could get
it to turn over by wrapping the old starter with a rubber mallet. That is
when I knew it was a starter problem. When I replaced the new starter I had
a discussion with the guy at the store. He told me to check the #4 starter
wire for corrosion by bending it and listening and feeling cracking sounds.
He said he was from Montana and had seen this happen before and that new
people kept thinking their new batteries were bad when it was the wire. I
have since changed the starter and that old wire. Now she turns over like a
Toyota 4 banger.
I'm not suggesting you get a new starter just check the wire. As for
starting the engine on a regular basis my vote is yes. I do and I also take
it for 5 mile drives.
