I guess it all depends on how tightly you want them to be held together. A .002
interference in 4 inches is a pretty light press and one that you could even
push together without heating. And it is one that can be pushed apart if need
be. If you want to have something equivalent to welding, then .010 would do the
trick (it will take at least a 350 degree differential temperature for
insertion). How long do you have to wiggle it around before it "sticks"? Good
question. With at least a .005 clearance like I suggested you will have
significant time - maybe 15 seconds to wiggle it before enough heat is
transferred from the hot to the cold. But once it starts to stick you are done,
as it will then transfer heat really fast, rapidly expanding the cold part. I
don't think it's a problem, as even cylinders are inserted into blocks that way,
and they will have over 4 inches to go in.

Thanks Jim and Matt. Part is open on each end and will hold air, will give it a
try. How much time do you get to line up so the cyl. is at the correct
