You don't have to give up anything. AC might cost a little in the city, but at
highways speeds if you compare running AC to running with the windows open, the
open windows will cost significantly more aero drag than the AC. So the AC
SAVES GAS at highway speeds, at least.
..., i don't lose sleep over my carbon footprint and I am definitely not giving
up my AC to save a few drops of petrol.
And someone else wondered about the safety of running higher pressure. I say
that yes, it is a safety issue. You may not notice it driving normally, but try
an unexpected evasive maneuver at high speed. I recently rented a car that
drove particularly bad, to the point I was nervous about maintaining traffic
speed(LA freeway traffic). I found that the tires were all inflated between 40
and 50 psi. I reduced them to the recommended pressure and all was fine.
Except that the "low tire pressure" warning light came on (I figured out how
the rental company fixed the problem, at least :-).
