I've been tracking down looseness in the steering gear and have finally (should
have seen it sooner) noticed that the spline in the lower U-joint is loose
against the spline on the steering gear input shaft. The PO appears to have
replaced the lower shaft and CV joint at one time and it looks like the steering
gear has fresher paint than the rest of the frame (well, it has a trace of paint
left). When I pull it apart and inspect the mating parts each appear to have no
real wear. But when slid together there is quite a bit of play. The PO also
appears to have tried to eliminate the play, as there is what looks like a
non-standard bolt clamping them together. When I attempt to torque the bolt I
can't get all the play out. Question: What could be wrong? Are there
mismatched splines that could have been used? Is there a special bolt for that
application? Is there a torque spec that will result in the collapse of the
U-joint and and result in a tight fit? I'm puzzled. Thanks for any advice.
