Hi Jim,
I have been running my 78 with only Schrader valves on the bags themselves since 2002. My bags never leak down and I only add air maybe once or twice a year. I did put on bradded ss air lines from the Schrader valve to an external port just above the "t" skirt between the two rear wheels to make filling just that much more convenient. I use a 1 hp 120 volt compressor that plugs into one of my two 1000 watt Xantrex inverters when I need to air up and a key pressing on the stem of the Schrader valve when I need to drop the rear end. Works like a charm, is maintenance free and very fast. I can blow the bag up from 40 psi to my normal 90 psi running pressure in a minute or so. It takes another 30 seconds to store the compressor and I am off. Way better from my pov than fighting all the leak potential in the stock set up. Not everyone will agree, but it sure has worked well for me.

Now 9000 miles and counting on our nearly three month cross county adventure. Expect to be at about 11000 miles when we get home to Kerby, OR the second week in Sept. So far trouble free save for one blown tire (ps side front bogy tire 3yrs old and 35000miles, no explanation), one broken battery plate (really rough roads in one spot) and one bad starter solenoid.

If I were going to transport one as you describe and I didn't trust the air
bags, I would find a couple of known good used ones and install just the
bags with shrader valves at the bag, inflate to ride height with an aux
compressor, and head for the barn. On the road is no place to check all the
possible stuff that you can't measure properly when it is all covered with
road crud and old hardened chassis grease. Just my 2 cents worth.
