G'day,
I took Double Trouble down to Ben's shop to fit a new tailpipe. It's the
first time I had driven it since we:
* replaced the timing chain
* replaced the oil pan gasket (was leaking)
* installed the oil pan with twin drain plugs
* replaced the transmission pan gasket (was leaking)
* installed the trans oil pan with temp sensor and drain
* replaced the speedo bullet o-rings
* installed a 3.21 to 1 final drive
* installed one of Jim B's sensitized brake boosters
I AM BLOWN AWAY by the improvement in brake performance! Double Trouble has
Caddy calipers on the front and middle axles and drums on the rear (Ken Frey
fitted drum brakes to the rear when I first bought it to pass NJ state
inspection). Last time I was here we installed a new master cylinder,
stainless steel brake lines, rebuilt Caddy calipers on the front and middle
axles, and braided SS flex hoses. The brakes were OK but took a lot of force
to stop. I felt that Helen would not be able to drive it safely. I now only
have to TOUCH the brake pedal to start braking.
Jim told me to run it up to about 5 mph and slam on the brakes. I did so and
everything that wasn't nailed down took off towards the front of the coach!
The bottom of the old booster had a 8/93 engraved into it so it had been
replaced.
Bottom line: if you know all the components in your brake system are good
but you're still not happy with the force it takes to stop your GMC this
booster IS the way to go!
The performance is WAY better also! I suspect the stretch in the timing
chain retarded the cam timing and effected low rpm performance. I can't
believe how much better it accelerates! I realize the 3.21 to 1 final drive
contributed to this also but the engine does seem to be "peppier" and
quieter.
When I got back from Ben's I checked and couldn't see even a hit of an oil
leak. Hopefully that will remain the same once I am out on the highway!
Now if I can finish up the interior before Helen decides to give up and fly
back to Sydney I'll be really happy man!
Regards,
Rob M.
