Just as a follow up: the majority of the trouble appears to have been the connector at the alternator.
It was pretty damaged by a PO. We've replaced the connector, and now have the GEN light properly on
when the key is "on". Still have a glow in the "accessory" position to sort out, but at least it's progress.
Now I get to figure out why none of the dash lights on the fuel gauge work even though the other instrument lights are fine...
Ah, the joys of old mangled wiring!
