Gene,
I do not have an electric fuel pump and have never had problems with vapor
lock, fuel starvation, or hard starting.
Being a tightwad, I always buy the cheapest gas I can find. Often that is
ARCO which contains ethanol. I have driven my GMC over the Grapevine, up
US 395 from southern CA to NV and all its passes, across AZ with temps over
100 F, and from GA to WA all while towing a CRV with no problems.
When I purchased my GMC, the carb fuel filter plugged in less than 60
miles. I removed it and drove about 2000 miles before I rebuilt the carb
and installed a new filter. The new filter plugged in less than 30 miles.
I removed it and have run with only the tank sock filters since June, 2001.
I figure anything that will pass through the sock filters is too small to
plug the carb. When I rebuilt the carb, I installed a Mr Gasket Carb. Heat
Dissapator which consists of multiple gaskets with aluminum layers between
them.

I have not blocked the manifold heat passage so I have a hot manifold. I
do inspect my distributor before most trips to insure the vacuum and
centrifugal advances are working. From time to time, the idle speed will
increase and I will find the distributor centrifugal advance is dry and
sticking. A little while lube cures the problem. The advances are setup
per the procedure on the GMC Western States web site.
We recently returned from a 3000 mile trip to southern CA in our 78 Blazer
with a 305 small block and a quadrajet. The last 1000 miles we towed 4200
lbs of car and tow dolly up I5. This took us over 2 - 4000+ ft passes with
6% grades with the temps above 90F for most of the trip. On the way down
we went through Sequoia National Park with a 8% grade up to see the General
Sherman, worlds largest tree. The AC was on most of the way. Again no
problems with vapor lock in the Blazer.
Based on my experience with engines equipped with stock fuel pumps and
quadrajets, I think electric fuel pumps are treating the symptoms and not
the cause. I don't know what is causing the problem, but hope I continue
to avoid it. There may have been some changes in gasoline formulations
since the last time I used the GMC. I am about to wake it up from its 3
year nap put it back on the road if I can get the brakes working properly.
Hopefully it will run as good as it was when I parked it.
