This is our trip to the GMC Western States roundup in Auburn.
We had planned to caravan with another 49er GMCer so leaving on time
was important.
Wednesday morning, I drove down the hill a little early, stopped at
the gas station and filled up with diesel, It took almost 14 gallons.
I then called Gene to let him know we were on our way. He reminded me
to call him again when we got to the bottom of the Sunol grade.
Motorhome was doing great, crested the grade at 45mph, when I got to
the bottom, I called Gene.
Already? Was his reply when I said we’re at the bottom of the grade.
He was to get on the freeway a couple of miles ahead of me. He called
back to let me know he was on the freeway and to change the CB to
channel 13. We drove mostly just under 65mph. The route was to take
680 to 80 to exit 119A.
Somewhere close to Sacramento, we noticed a GMC up ahead, and we
decided to pass him up. It turns out it was another 49er GMCer and
once he recognized us, he followed us the 30 plus miles to the
destination.
Gene’s gps got us through town and side street to the fairground entrance.
I parked next to Gene on vendor row and Bill Hubler parked next to me.
He was so happy that someone else had a diesel so we are now an elite group.
Sunday after we finished dinner, we let the rally and headed home.
Most people were still eating when we sneaked out.
Rout home was the reverse, I80 to 680. Drove mostly at 65 and crested
the Sunol grade at 32 in second gear. Almost made it up my hill to
within my property.
I have a few more readings to share with the diesel group for help
with improvement.
