Well for those of you following this saga, over the last 2 months my Onan has been a major pain in my ass, refusing to function correctly.

I tried everything and I mean everything to get it to run correctly. I wanna thank the members here who offered me advice and assistance with parts and trouble shooting to get it running correctly.

Turns out all along it was indeed the original points ignition not keeping a proper timing. this is waht cause the erratic running conditions.

Following a members tip I ordered a pertronix and installed it yesterday. It was a bear as I used a VW model but in hind sight I needed a unit with a yellow dot as the VW unit does not show where it is sensitive and I destroyed 3 of my 4 magnets in the process of dialing the unit in.

Finally at about 23:00 hours last night I achieved Victory over the green turd, with a fixed timing of about 28-30 degrees. my unit has a 25 degree mark so it is an early Onan. the slight advance made a big difference and timing is spot on. the unit now puts out a steady 125 volts and only wonders in tenths of volts instead of + or - 10 volts. the Onan now runs like a Swiss watch!

What a difference a little timing makes, only RPM changes are under load changes, and she settles in right back at 125 volts even under load in about a second or 2!

if you have an Onan and its running is suspect, or if it runs good enough but you want to eliminate that occasional stumble, go with a pertronix install and timing between 25-30 degrees! it fixes whats wrong with the green troll IMHO! Also now the Onan burns clean, no more stinky onan exhaust!!
