"Secondly, I have been told not to shift manually because when you do it uses a second gear band instead of clutches, is that right?"

Question above asked by Paul A but no answer yet so a new thread. I think that I have heard that Manny says to shift into second manually when climbing because there is more pressure on the bands and/or clutches. What is the correct thing to do?
