We ended up completely removing the original bases and using after market swivels,
power slides, and sufficient steel channel to bolt to the base of the seats.
If you don't want swivels, there are lots of aftermarket fixed bases of varying heights.
I was originally going to try to re-form the original swivels and bases, but it was
a lot easier to buy new bases. We also decided to mount the swivels off-center, as
the original later models did to allow the seat to more easily clear the sides.
Since the aftermarket base is a lot smaller than the old ones, we bolted
steel plates to the underside of the floor to spread the load out to the original
footprint. They're still in progress, but I'll post pics when they're installed.
There's aluminum frame around the entire perimeter of the original seat bases --
they're not just bolted to the plywood. Also, not sure if this was original, but there
was some aluminum flat bar and u-channel underneath the old bolts to add stiffness and
spread the load. BTW, take out the wheel wells when you're doing this and it'll be
a LOT easier to work on.
Replacing the base means you could keep the whole original seats and bases intact,
and just bolt them back in place in future if you wanted.
I was considering using the honda seatbelt arrangement, but after this discussion,
I think I'll bolt directly to the floor as in the original design. The honda seatbelt
buckle just bolts into the bottom of the seat, so is easy to remove.
