Emery's comments go to the heart of the issue on combined
GMCMI/FMCA conventions. As it is unrealistic to expect GMCMI
members to pay both a GMCMI registration fee (to cover GMCMI
fixed costs) AND the FMCA fee, GMCMI members (1500+) would
have to make some choices: Among them -

1. Continue current practice of holding two stand-alone
GMCMI conventions each year (minimum required by FMCA
bylaws).

2. Combine one (or both) GMCMI conventions each year with
FMCA on an occasional (or continuing) basis.

Doing 2. would require members' consideration of liquidating
the GMCMI equipment inventory (to eliminate
storage/transportation costs) AND discontinuing the role of
a PAID convention manager. Those costs are included in the
GMCMI convention registration fees. Elimination of one (or
both) GMCMI stand-alone conventions, would leave no way to
cover these and other fixed expenses. A major deterrent to
doing away with the paid role is getting volunteers to
plan/execute conventions of GMCMI's size and scope - even if
combined with FMCA...

'Just some realities that have to be addressed (and have
been) to "make it happen". To date, as far as GMCMI Board
members can determine, there is no ground swell of support
among GMCMI members for the changes required to "make it
happen".

Incidentally, it is important to note that GMCMI convention
registration fees are designed to cover the fixed and
variable costs on a breakeven basis. The "wild card" in each
convention budget is how many people will attend. If fewer
come than forecast, the club incurs a deficit that has to be
covered by the club's reserves fund. If more come than
forecast, the club incurs a surplus (which goes to the
reserves fund). GMCMI conventions are always designed to
just breakeven - never to "make money".

'Probably "TMI "(too much information) for the interests of
most participants on this forum...

about "The Vendor Question":

"As far as I know we are the only GMC club that compensates
a Convention Manager who works throughout the year to plan
and execute our conventions. We have a large amount of
equipment and we have storage and transportation costs of
our equipment even if we were to decide not to use it at a
convention, our salary for our convention manager, and many
other
things (would continue). Would members be willing to pay
for the GMCMI overhead costs and also the FMCA convention
fee? "
