Problems may have been solved by now.

Shurflo water pump failure

Sorry to bring up this never-ending saga once again. I just installed
what must
be my
seventh or eighth Shurflo 5.7 Smart Sensor Extreme pump. The last one
failed
after less
than ten days of use. It ran fine initially but the other night I heard
the pump
running very
slowly despite no water use underway. Switched it off. After morning
showers
there was a
puddle that had run out from the, by then, leaking pump.

My pump failed in Baja last year and I had no choice but to buy the only
replacement I
could find, in San Jose del Cabo, so now I have two and carry a spare.
When one
fails I
install the spare and seek immediate replacement of the failed pump,
which
Shuflo has
been very good about.

I installed the spare yesterday. So far so good but I feel another
failure is
inevitable.

Earlier this year I was told by Shurflo that they had finally resolved
their
problems with
some upgrades and the failures were behind them. Yet both of my last two
failed
pumps
had post-upgrade manufacturing dates.

We're headed to Alaska next summer and I feel I need a solution before
then.

My RB Lazy Daze was the last year with the Whisper King pump. I replaced
it with
the 5.7
shortly after delivery and was quite happy. This was the original 5.7
with a
diaphragm type
pressure sensor. It worked great. But then Shurflo announced an "upgrade"
and
free
exchange. I took the bait, though I don't recall any problems with my
pump to
that point.

The new design replaced the diaphragm with a pressure switch. Apparently
there
had
been some floods due to failed diaphragms when connected to city water.
The
redesign
seems to be when the problems started. Symptoms have varied. Some pumps
wouldn't
turn on, others wouldn't turn off, some leaked, others were very erratic,
performance
would often degrade over time.

My installation is the stock LD 1/2' Pex plumbing to and from the pump,
but at
one point I
installed Shurflo's "silencing kit" which consists of two 18" sections of
flexible 1/2" tubing
that attach one to the inlet and one to the outlet. My flex tubing makes
a
gentle 180
degree bend on the inlet side and gentle 270 degree bend on the outlet
side. As
near as I
can tell the inlet side is otherwise a straight 6' run from the water
tank. Of
course the
flexible outlet connects to the LD plumbing that runs to all the water
using
fixtures.

It's hard not to think that something other than the pump may be at fault
here
but I can
see nothing about my installation that is unusual. I do hope to examine a
current Rear
Bath to see what LD currently does when installing this same pump.

Options I'm considering include:

Making the 5.7 pump even easier to swap by making a bolt-on mounting
system and
using electrical disconnects, continuing to carry a spare and just
changing the
pumps as
necessary as long as Shurflo continues to exchange them.

Adding Shurflo's small 24 oz. accumulator tank for smoother flow and
perhaps
less stress
on the pump.

Switching to the 4.0 Extreme pump on the theory that maybe the demand of
the 5.7
is
occasionally too high for the inlet plumbing, stressing the pump.

Switching to another brand (Flojet, Johnson).

Going back to the Whisper King with an added accumulator, probably just
the 24
oz.
model given the available space.

Any thoughts or information from those who've been dealing with similar
problems
would
be appreciated.
