G'day,

I sent this in as a response to Bill’s email but didn’t get a copy back
which I interpreted to mean that it didn’t go to the GMCnet email addresses
so here it is under a new subject.

G'day,

For those of you who run into Bill's situation:

Reference Maintenance Manual (MM) X-7725 Page 0-4 Towing Vehicle

TOWING:

Your vehicle may be towed on all six wheels, at speeds less than 35 mph
(56km/h), for distances up to 50 miles, provided the final drive, axle,
transmission, and steering system are otherwise normally operable. Use only
towing equipment specifically designed for this purpose following the
instructions of the towing equipment manufacturer. A separate safety chain
system must be used. For such towing the steering must be unlocked,
transmission in neutral, and the parking brake released. Attachments must be
to the engine front crossmember. Do not attach to bumpers or associated
brackets. Remember that power brakes and power steering assists will not be
available when the engine is inoperative.

I carry a copy of the MM in both my GMC's and if I ever need a tow and the
truck driver wants to tow it six down I'll show him this and see what he
says then.

Last fall on my way to Elkhart IN for the GMCES rally I lost the RH rear
wheel.  At the brakedown point I was about 50 miles from Tom Hampton's
facility in Marysville OH.  After all of the good stuff I had read here on
the GMCnet I dumped my AAA RVplus and went with Good Sam.  5 or 6 years
later I had the above problem.  Same story, I called Good Sam and told them
that I needed a roll back to take my GMC to Marysville.  They said, after
checking around, that they found a place only 18 miles from where I was that
said that they could fix my problem.  I said no I wanted someone who knows
our GMC's to work on it.  They would pay only 18 miles and I had to pay the
rest.  I said OK send the rollback.  5 hours later a wrecker, not a
rollback, showed up.  It was, I think, Budget Towing Service and not a
rollback.  The driver said that there isn't a rollback big enough to put a
GMC on so he after assuring me that it would be OK, took my cash for the
part of the tow that I had to pay for, picked up the back of my coach and
hauled it off to Marysville.  Letting him tow it that way, of course, turned
out to be a big problem but that's another story which will likely end up in
court. State Farm Insurance reimbursed me for my out of pocket expense.

Before I take the coach out again I will have AAA RVplus and will keep my
State Farm Insurance for backup.
