Let's see now: Allison was a General Motors division and the first P-51
Mustangs were powered by Allison V-1710 engines, so I guess that's close
enough to the GMC motorhome for us to share here a touching story about one
of the Greatest Generation to whom we owe so much, and the machine that
helped them keep the world free:

Wow, how cool. Glad he got to fly one again.

I once met a guy who flew a P38 over Europe during the war, he was only 18 at the time. He said at the end of the war when they lined everybody up and took the keys away and sent them home, they all cried because they were taking away their toys.

Ken,
Don't tell anybody in Florida that keeps lists or anything, but most of the P-51 (B model on) had a Packard built engines.
The NA-73 test beds and the A-51 Recons used by the British had Allison engines.
Still a great link, Thanks

Ken,

BRILLIANT!

As I watched the video I said to myself; "too bad 'Lt.' Brooks is too old to
fly February." When the segment about the dual control P-51 came up and
realized he was going to get to do that I was blown away. I well and truly
wonder what was going through his mind when he was in the air!

I would like to mention that the Brits would "put in a good word" for the
Spitfire and the boys that defeated the Luftwaffe during the Battle of
Britain! Come to think of it one of them did; "Never in the field of human
conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few." Winston Churchill.

Come to think of it they too are part of the "Greatest Generation."

Impressive movie on the Mustang. I was in a reserve squadron in Winnipeg in the 50's (402 Sqadron). WE had P51's. I was in Aero Engine at the time. The engines were indeed Packard Merlins. I'm no expert but I believe Allisons were in the lighnings which I never had the honour to work on - to my knowledg the RCAF never had any.

The '51 originally had the Allison V-1710. It was only about a year before
it was replaced by the Packard Merlin, based on a Rolls Royce design. Thus
my excuse for posting to the GMC site. :-)

Thanks Ken you brought back memories of the stories I was told by a really old friend years ago that flew the Burma Road in Mustang as a Mercenary (1938 I think).

Absolutely marvelous. I like stories like that about great guys like that
that flew great marvels of power and flight like that.

Sadly, we're approaching a time when all those heroes will be gone.
Thankfully, there are still three living and active in the church I attend.
One survived D-Day, the sixth of June.

IIRC the British bought early versions of P-38's but without the counter rotating engine.

Great video, Ken. Not a dry eye in the room and I am the only one here! Having wrapped an F-86D around me many times it brought back fond memories, only no one was shooting at me then. I agree with the pilot in the film who said they don't make men like the guys who flew the P-51's anymore!

I lost a cousin in the Korean conflict flying an 86.

The story of the 51 made me aware, again, of what he must have felt each
time he climbed into the cockpit.

Agreed, not a dry eye. Even the second time through.

Hi

Just to add a note...for those of you who were fortunate enough to have
visited the Air Space Museum last September at the GMCMI Rally in Pueblo,
you will remember your tour guide, Docent Col Vincent "Flash" Gordon, a
perky WWII P-51 Mustang fighter Pilot, all of 93 years young. Despite his
age, "Flash" was still the slightly cocky, proud and very jet-jockey pilot
of long ago. "Flash" flew 79 missions over Germany...A true warrior...

Our 15 min tour turned into two hours of fascinating history)!!
