If you want to increase efficiency in the GMC dash A/C, think about changing to a modern condenser(that part in front of the radiator).
"HFC-134a also has a diffferent pressure/temperature curve so that within the high pressure side of the system there will be more pressure at a given temperature. To keep the pressures down to acceptable levels you must get rid of more heat. In the end this means larger or more efficient condensers."
Vintage Air Catalog #34 p.11
One of my customers had one made last year using the GMC end brackets to mount in the original location. While I have a good photo of it, I cannot add it here as it is 22Kb and this only allows 1Kb in size.
Someone tell me how/where to put the photo and I will post it.
Thx, Michael at GEMRECS
HAVE A GREAT GMC MOTORHOME YEAR EVERYONE!

I am running two evaporators (original and an under dash ad on from JimK) with the original condenser. The condenser is not pretty, having taken a few hits and fin bends in its day. On top of that, I have 134 in my system and according to reports that is not the most efficient. Sitting at a stop light in hot weather we notice the air is a bit warmer. I don't have any electric fans to help move air when idling. When driving both units work fine and we are at last cool.

I agree Ken. If you don't put enough in, it darn near blows ice
cubes. The real issue is the volume of air, not the temp. If there
was a turn key kit available, I would probably opt for it. I've
installed a couple of Vintage air units and one Airtique unit in
classic cars. They are much simpler than that darn "box" and crappy
plastic ducting and failure prone controls that are in the GMC.
