I absolutely love the upgrades, and the AC upgrade seems like a wonderful idea!

Did you reuse the original dash, or strengthen it in any way? Mine will need some major help at some time, though the carpet dashtopper helps hide a multitude of sins right now.

Were you able to remove it without pulling the windshields? The forward edge screws on mine seem to be "welded" in place, and I don't know if I can get them out without some major difficulty.

I know that the dashboard material is quite fragile after all these years, and i don't want to end up with a pile of pieces. I have a friend in the fiberglass business up here, so he may be able to help me if I can get the dash out.

Tom,

This is something I have been planning on doing on my coach. Do you still have the drawing for the box you designed? You can respond via private message if you wish.

Have y'all looked at what Emery Stora did for his A/C upgrade?
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5277
Simplest most effective change I have seen. Also with this change
you can empty your HVAC up front and gain more storage area.

Emery's auxiliary A/C upgrade is in additional to the factory
installed Heater & A/C unit. It is Tee'ed off the factory A/C hoses
and he still uses the A6 compressor which has more than enough
capacity for the additional unit. I know of several that also have
replaced the original A6 Compressor with a Sanden radial compressor
which also requires new mounting brackets. Emery's installation is
very well done and one of many versions that have been done out
there. The Jim's both sell and Auxiliary A/C units that can be
installed and some have added auxiliary units under the seats.
Although it would be nice to have you gain no extra space for storage
because nothing has been removed.

These aux.add ons are simple to add and several of our customers
install them by themself then they bring it by for us to connect the
refrigeration line and charge it.

JR,

"...several that also have replaced the original A6 Compressor with a Sanden
radial compressor which also requires new mounting brackets..." is not
entirely correct: Many, if not most, of the Sanden compressors have 4
mounting holes in a square around the circumference of the body just behind
the pulley. It's trivially simple to mount those on the GMC's front mount:
Just remove the A6 and all of its cast iron brackets and dispose of them.
Take the 1/4" or so thick front plate off and position it on the front of
the Sanden; you'll find that the holes line up almost perfectly; I had to
elongate each of them maybe 1/16"-1/8" on my Sanden-clone. Put the plate
back on the engine and bolt the Sanden to it. A lot of people use only that
mounting. I put a 1/8"x1-1/4" strut from the rear of the compressor to a
double-threaded head bolt to ensure stability. The pulleys line up
perfectly.

There are a lot of Sandens and their clones which mount using 4 bosses
perpendicular to the axis of the compressor; those would require complete
new brackets -- I certainly wouldn't fool with those.

The Sanden has a very good manual available for download at
http://www.sanden.com/images/SD_Service_Guide_Rev.2.pdf

<http://www.sanden.com/images/SD_Service_Guide_Rev.2.pdf>According to that
manual, they make units on which the hose fittings are GM-compatible. Good
luck finding one of those. It cost me more than the $75 I paid for my new
compressor to have replacement hoses made; partially because they had to
weld fittings together to get the right combination. The shop said the
7-groove serpentine belt pulley alone sells for almost twice the eBay price
of the compressor with pulley.

I'm more than happy with my Seltec (Sanden clone) -- and I haven't even had
to remove it yet. The 100# (seems like) weight difference will REALLY be
appreciated when I do. :-)

Here's a picture showing the mounting holes pretty well -- and more info.

Tom Logue has installed a Vintage Air system in his GMC. See his photos here. Tom removed the dash and built a new one, beautiful. I want to do it without removing the dash by using the existing duct work in the GMC but don't know if that can be done.
Tom shows us how to install the Vintage Air box under the hood. Michael at GEMRECS

Tom - where did you get the four gauge cluster you used in the dash remodel?

Very nice job Tom, especially the dash. Looks like something I might be able to do.
