I got word yesterday that longtime Dixielander, and GMCI member, and
my friend Lynn "Oley" Olson passed away on Dec 11th. He was diagnosed
with an aggressive advanced cancer soon after he returned from the
Global Challenge (for those that do not know, Oley's main passion was
beach cat sailing). This had been the cause of his back pain. The
disease and progression was quick and he did not want people to be
worried about him. In respect of his wishes there will be no formal
funeral plans. There will be a memorial here in Chattanooga. The thing
Oley asked is for people to have a beer in his honor. He will be
missed. His love of sailing and life was infectious. Oley was the
person that introduced me to the GMC and loved his. It was Oley that
took me to my first GMC rally, it was Oley that made me a better
sailer, and it was Oley that made me a better man for knowing him. The
GMC went to his brother in KY. They are hoping that he and his sons
family use it instead of sitting in the barn.

(privateeryachtclub.org) in Hixson,(Chattanooga) TN on Jan 2nd,
between 4PM and 7PM EST.

Richard,
Wonderfully written tribute to your friend and a fellow GMCer. I am sorry to hear of his death and your loss.
His family and friends will be in our thoughts.

I first met Oley years ago at one of our beach cat regattas when he
was inquiring about my GMC. Of course I was glad to share all I could
about how great it was to be able to attend these regattas and stay on
the beach or at the Yacht club in the motorhome while other sailers
were having to get hotel rooms and dealing with late checkouts , etc.
It didn't take him long to find his GMC and join the GMC fraternity.
He will be missed by the sailers and GMCers alike.
