I visited Vintage Air in San Antonio(home of the Alamo) yesterday after looking through a catalog my son-in-law had. It appears to me that their new A/C units, controlled with servos, not cables, may fit where the "box" is under the GMC hood.
They manufacture and sell a complete system for about $1400. I have already spent that much on my 74 and still do not have much to show for it. They use Sanden compressors.
Vintage Air readily admits their primary business is for hot rods and muscle cars of the by-gone era, however, it appears to me that their components MAY fit our vehicles and if so would dramatically improve the dash air.
I know that many of you have used other methods to improve the dash air, some even have a second evaporator under the passenger seat. However, this system not only does away with the out dated condenser, but offers state-of-the art components that modernize the A/C.
Rather than remove the dash, which is virtually impossible without tearing it up, and/or removing the windshields, I thought we could "fish" the hoses through the existing GMC ducts from the Vintage Air box under the hood.
Also, they have dealers around the country who can install and honor any warranty they may offer.
While they won't "engineer" a system for us, I think we can do it ourselves with the knowledgable guys we already have.
I will post measurements soon of the space in the GMC, the V.A. system, etc.
Meanwhile, comments??...........Michael at GEMRECS

Michael,
You might want to talk with Jim at the Coop as he has installed some
of these as add on units on the early GMCs.

I wonder if they might engineer something for us if we got a group buy
going.
I would guess they'd be interested if we could commit to 50 - 75 units.

There is an option to Vintage Air. I have just recently gone through the brain numbing comparison /evaluation. My judgment was to go with Vintage Air competitor...Classic Auto Air (http://www.classicautoair.com). I have Vintage air in my street rod..but felt the design and construction was a bit better with Classic. Being installed at the Coop as we speak.
JWID...Vintage is good as well.

Seems to me a number of folks have put these systems
in their coach.
Do these packages include a new compressor
or use the stock unit?
Can some of you post the model numbers you've installed?
How about ball park costs for installation?

Rob..
I used the Street Rod Cooler II with electric controls. The Street Rod Deluxe pushes more air, but Jim didn't think the additional 3 inches would fit in my application. Bit different than OEM. I would look at the Deluxe for sure in OEM.
Richard,
You can get complete new packages or bits and pieces. see (http://www.classicautoair.com/Street_Rod_Air_Conditioning_AC_3.html). One of the best upgrades to consider according to the folks at Classic is a new condenser. The design and mfr technology apparently changed dramatically over the intervening years.

There are more than one design to consider when coming up with an unit
to fit our coaches.
When you look at heating, defrosting and venting, it is not so easy.
We are a authorized dealer for Vintage Air. We sell units to add on as
well as the whole dash unit. For the GMC, they do not have one, but
I'm sure you guys would not want to commit to some high numbers.
I can tell you that they will not entertain a group buy unless we are involved.
