Howard-
We live in the Blue Ridge mountains at a ski and golf area named
Wintergreen. We travel a lot and haven't been here much lately and your
videos remind me that we take the beauty of this area for granted.
For example, I just returned from my doctor's office in Fishersville, VA
and took a short cut down the Blue Ridge Parkway for 12 miles to Reeds
Gap. It's still very snow covered with about 3 feet of snow except for
the roadway and the Shenandoah Valley to
the west and the Rockfish Valley to the east are all white with ribbons
of black when the roads are cleared. A few tourist were out taking
pictures and I just wanted to get home.
We love living here and wish all of our GMC friends could just live
around us.

Hi Doc, ...I know where your are talking about and enjoyed the visions within the canyons of my mind as I read what you wrote. It was beautiful.

We started our odyssey just north of you at Waynesboro and ended at Boone, NC, stopped for a multiplicity of reasons. Hope to do the southern half of the Blue Ridge this spring like Richard.

We are both blessed to live is such a unique and beautiful part of our country, ...and we moved here from Hawaii. Thanks for your input. Greatly appreciated.

Howard,

Thanks for this, Helen and I did this last November (2008) on our tour of the East Coast.

Can't remember where we got on the Blue Ridge Parkway but I do remember a sign "Not suitable for RV's and Semis" or words to that effect. I figured they were talking about 40 foot SOB's. They weren't kidding as the "approach" road was narrow and had some SERIOUSLY tight switchbacks!

Once "on top" the fall colors were ablaze and it was spectacular!

Rob,

It think you're right: We took the 40' SOB diesel pusher up there in '98 or
so. I ploughed new drainage ditches down the middle of the pavement on some
of those dipping switchbacks, using my trailer hitch. No problem once on
the parkway but the approach and departure routes we took were tough -- they
were such isolated ones that I don't think they HAD and signs (could it be
they were put up in response to my passing?)

I had a friend that crashed his airplane in your neighborhood about 20 years ago. He could not move and neither could his wife. After two days the let their 9 year old son hike out of there. After about 6 hours the 9 year old found an unoccupied cabin. He broke into the cabin and found an active telephone that someone has not shut off for the season. He called 911 and the cops found the kid by the originating phone number. The kid then lead them to his parents. As a result of the accident my friend walks with two canes today.

Nice area you are in there, just do not do any off airport landings in them thar hills.

Howie and Doreen,

We'll keep a light on until we see yah next.

Cold here this morning 21* F and I have a tee time in 2 1/2 hours (10AM). I guess if duck hunters can go out in this, I can too and shot some golfs. At least I'm not blowing thru a Kazoo pretending to be a duck and I'll be dry (I hope) .

Ken-
I'm aware of a crashed military trainer just above us at around milepost
8 on the B R Parkway and it is a common destination for hiking groups.
I'll have to look into the other crash. Any idea exactly where it
crashed? Many former pilots live in the area and still fly private
planes and one guy down the road has two choppers. The NG weekend
warriors like to follow the mountain range from north to south at low
altitude in F-16's and occasionally some Navy F-18's from Oceanna buzz
the valley as well. All of that activity has steadily declined over the
last five years.
Looks like GMCES may be going to north Georgia this Spring- are you up
for that?

After about 6 hours the 9 year old found an unoccupied cabin. He broke into the cabin and found an active telephone that someone has not shut off for the season. He called 911 and the cops found the kid by the originating phone number. The kid then lead them to his parents. As a result of the accident my friend walks with two canes today.

G'day Rob,

Wish I'd known you were in the area. Would have enjoyed sitting down with you and Helen enjoying a 'cup-o-mud' and some meaningful dialog.  Perhaps next time.

Doreen and I 'did' the southern part of the Blue Ridge Parkway soon after the Dixielander's rally at Maggie Valley in 2009 (see movie at)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W1IosO-VYE , in a driving rain and beautiful fog. Thought we got some great movies, ...but my videographer was turning the camera on when she laid the camera in her lab and off to take the movies. Such is life, ...and she has learned well and we have the opportunity to do it again.

Thanks for the come back.
