I knew the parts coach had a transmission leak but I just thought it was a rusted line.
When we got it out today we found this:

Any ideas?

It looks like the parking pawl mechanism is directly below the hole, so potentially, it was either jammed into park while moving at "just the right speed" or parked on a pretty steep hill where the load was enough to fail that part of the case.
I say potentially, and "just the right speed" because, at least on cars, they abuse test the heck out of parking pawls. I can recall in a brief GMI student assignment at the Toledo transmission plant (THM 350's in those days) going for test drives with the quality staff, where they would surprisingly calmly, put the transmission in park at 60 mph (part of an x many per day audit test) The pawl would ratchet very loudly until the car slowed down to maybe 10 or 15 mph and then lock in abruptly, then lock the tires briefly and stop. So, maybe if you got it just below the "ratchet" speed, and had some bad luck it would do this.
The other part of that is, maybe they did this on Toronado's and not on 11,000 pound motorhomes, so it might have been considered an acceptable risk back in the day. Someone like Manny might know more of the history specific to 425's and GMC's.

I was enrolled in the MN GMC Training Center in 1963. The Pontiac
division. Saw some pretty neat training films.

What a small world! I moved to Minnesota in 64 and went to highschool there before moving to Michigan.

""It is a small world. I was accepted to GMI to start in 1970. I decided to pass on starting in '70. I needed to "find myself" at least thats what I told my parents. So I went drag racing Funny Cars and Fuel Dragsters professionally.

Bob, Steve and Jeff,
It is a small world. I'm apparently a bit younger, as I was class of '82 (although I worked and did vo-tech school for 3 years before going, 53 now.) In retrospect, the 60's and 70's would have been the golden years (no women there then, though, so that made up for it a little . . .). I managed to see a lot of the ugly parts of GM's history, especially the surprise ending for me. And Jeff, I got to consider the racing vs. GMI thing also, as between the time I was accepted and when I was to enroll, the dealer I was working for got me thrown out. So, thought about going road racing (which I was doing part-time crew work with one of the dealers friends as driver). Silly me, I thought the "security" of the big auto company was a better deal than the uncertainty in racing, so I clawed my way back in. Although the last couple years haven't been good for the Nascar industry either. All-in, can't complain though, got a great education for next to no money.
