I sumbled across a new-to-me web site which happened to have a pretty good
article about the GMC, titled as the subject above, written by someone who
knows a lot about the vehicle and its history, but apparently little about
its present status. The article elicited enthusiastic response from readers
who obvious knew NOTHING about the current situation. I sent them a little
guidance.

A good article. They did know something about the TZE. Thanks for pointing it out. I read the Vega and Olds Diesel bashing ones too and left a little post too.

Guys, I am the Editor-in-Chief of Autosavant as well as the author of the article that the OP linked to. I noticed that we had a surge in comments (and traffic) on this four month old article, so I eventually found that it came from your site.

I wanted to drop you all a note to say that I really appreciate the information that you've shared on our site and the informative, well-written comments. You've certainly added to our discussion there.

Enjoy your GMC Motorhomes, and please don't hesitate to come back to Autosavant regularly as we cover cars and the car business.

Welcome Chris.

We encourage anyone interested the GMC motorhome (owner or not) to stick around and participate. Non-owners, former owners, and SOB (some other brand) owners all have something to contribute to the group.

Again Welcome

Ken B.

Chris,

I'm sure we all appreciate your recognizing our interest in your site. I
didn't mention it in pointing out the GMC article, but I was impressed with
the overall quality of your site. It's been added to my bookmarks.

We also appreciate your helping us to spread the "GMC Word"; despite the
facts that we have a lot of activities and that our coaches always attract a
lot of attention from the public, there seem to be far too many enthusiasts
who don't realize how great the GMC and its community are. Thanks for your
contribution to our publicity efforts.

That red Packard is an interesting bug isn't it. From the lack of a front grille it may be rear engine air-cooled like the VW and Corvair's. Look at the front hub - it looks as if the brake drum is finned and painted to accent the wheel???

It sure would make an eye catching towd!

Getting off subject here--but I've seen that vehicle somewhere before. My
mind is telling me it was on a trip to Canada in 1954 or so. It appears the
hood/fender are hinged on the front. If it has a 4 cylinder, as I'm trying
to recall, there's a lot of room under the bonnet. Back then those folks
north of the border got some slightly different vehicles. Remember the
Meteor?

So, Fred, it could have been a Packard by Studebaker.

Oh golly. I'm thinking about the first Isetta I saw in 1955. It was the
Italian version. Now that thing was rare and different. The Germans and
English had different models but based on the same body style.

Time to stop thinking about "yesterday".

He seems like a very nice fellow. I do not know if he is reading our responses to him, but I hope he stops in again.

That unusual-looking car on the right side of the page is actually a 1961 Panhard PL 17, from the French manufacturer Panhard.

I didn't know that myself until our Publisher told me. He mentioned that he actually owned one in the past.

Looked like Packard to me too, but i Had a old Packard (1950) and could not believe the red one was a Packard. Looked at the photo info and lo and behold, one letter different makes a big difference. Very Happy

Then you're the one who should be mentioning this bit of trivia, not me,
Dave:

Remember when cars had (maybe some still have) a bar from the rear axle on
one side diagonally across to the frame on the other side? "Panhard rod".
Yep, one & the same.

Torsion bar is easier to say than Panhard bar.

Also, know I know why I saw the Panhard in Quebec. It wasn't a trip in 56
but one in 61. There was a lot of snow that January -- in the midwest with
hardly any in the northeast. Global warming?

Their functions entirely different. The Panhard Rod restricts lateral
movement only, with no intended effect on vertical movement nor on roll.

Funny! Smile

I am a huge fan of both the GMC Motorhome and of camping. Sadly, monetary, time, and storage availability are all standing in my way at the moment. I now know where to go for information should I ever get the itch to move on one, though!

I have two boys under five at home, so summer 2010 will be the first time that we attempt camping - in a cabin - as a family. If that goes well, we may rent an RV the following summer, but I'm years and many thousands of dollars away from buying one of my own. Smile
