Does anyone know the proper reamer to use to fit the original GMC wiper splined sleeve into the Lumina wiper? I notice that some folks use a step drill but I would prefer a tapered reamer to fit the original sleeve.

I did look it up. As I recall (not guaranty here at all), it was a 15* reamer and the best I could do for a single tool was about 62$us.

I would might have preferred a tapered reamer also, but the price was a stopper - Plus, what you really want is a taper spline broach. I don't even want to think what babe would set you back. It could be done with an EDM, but machining the electrode to do it is not going to be cheap.

Next part of the story. The cheap step drill from Harbor Freight is just a great answer. The taper is close enough and the ridges inside the resulting hole cause a high enough point load to extrude the arm material into the spline - TaDa - it works great. Use lots of WD-40 as a cutting lube so the tool does not get fouled with adhered material. Be sure to wash it off before painting (brake cleaner works). The arm will get garfed up in drilling and you will want to squirt some flat black on it before you screw it on.

By the way, if you should happen to over shoot a little and the original drive bushing sticks out the top of the arm. Contact me because I have spacers that I made up to go on top of the arm and are clearenced for the protruding spacer. They also are thick enough so you can use the original acorn nut.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas

Matt

Matt,

Good idea! However, as I am not familiar with the technical term "garfed up"
could you please define it for me?

Thanks,

When I've reamed the Lumina arms with a step bit, I'm very careful to
leave the knurled knob about 1/32" proud of the bottom of the base.
After a trial fit on the pivot so I'm sure the flat is in the right
position, I keep the knurled knob in that position until I get the
assembly in a smooth-jawed vice. Pushing the know into the arm that
final little bit cuts the splines and makes the knob difficult to
remove.

Ken H.

Thanks to all that replied. I am going to use Fred's measurements and take them to my machinst to get them reamed. I think this is the best way to go, given the torque that is involved. Another alternative is to weld or otherwise attach the end of the Lumina splined shaft onto the GMC shaft. I don't like the step drill approach, especioally from Harbor Freight. That's one place I try to avoid.

If you want a couple of Lumina wiper shafts, I've got at least two whole trains on my shop floor about to be scrapped. I will pull out a pair of shafts and ship them to you for the cost of shipping.

The tapered reamer that I used to open the tapered ball joint hole on the Eldo and Toro knuckles to fit the GMC ball joint worked well for me. I got mine from 'mytoolstore.com'

I used a cone shaped abrasive grinding stone on my variable speed drill. It was the right taper and sacrificed itself for the lumina wipers. Not exactly rocket science but worked. Cost $2 bucks or thereabouts.

ask your friend if he can make a "D bit". these are easy to make from a piece of drill rod. if i get around to changing wiper arms i plan to make a taper bit. i may offer them for sale.
