Hi all,
A friend of my wife's has asked for a recommendation for a laptop computer.
Her uses are relatively simple, surf the net, ebay (buying and selling), photo storage, email. She uses AOL, has Roadrunner/TimeWarner. She is disenchanted with a Dell after a six months of issues, including 3 hard drives, and has returned it.
Our two year old laptop is a Gateway and it serves us well -- and our uses are similar.
Model numbers, sources, etc, appreciated.
She may prefer to order on-line since she lives in NYC.
Thanks for your help.

Dennis

Dennis-
I went through two Toshiba's with four hard drive problems and finally
bought a Gateway laptop with high res screen and wireless communications
built in for use with my GPS in my GMC. It was manufactured 18 months
ago so the model number is no longer made. They are competitive in
price and it's RED.

Dennis,

I have a Gateway that I bought in 2002 that's still going strong. The only
thing that's died is the batteries. I only use it while traveling so I don't
care that it's slow. I bought Helen a used HP a year ago for $300 and that's
going good too.

If you guys would have bought a Mac you wouldn't had all those
problems. Always have had Mac's at home since the the early 90's and
never had a hardware failure. On second desktop which is a dual core
with 8 gig of memory and just replaced my old 2002 MacBook which the
wife now uses to pay bills with a new MacBook dual core with 4 gig of
memory. So much easier to use than a PC without all the issues you
guy have to put up with. The PC OS has always tried to catchup with
the MAC OS for years. I will now duck and hide!!!!!

I never had any special hardware issues with my PC's but the constant problems with anti virus programs, nagging to do this or update that and so on drove me to try the Mac's. Not quite 2 years into them, and I am a happy camper. The switch was not as easy as Mac would have you believe, but the reduction of aggravation has been worth the price of admission. I would say you should at least consider them, if the price is OK. They are more expensive, but not having to fix and adjust daily has been worth it to me.

Lenovo T-series Think pad. You get what you pay for.

You don't get all the extra crap that the store bought computers come with, and you can still order them with XP.

they are not cheap, but the work, and they last.

www.lenovo.com

I have a T-61. they are business computers. all the rest of the lenovo's are consumer models and pretty much like everything else.

Chris,
The T-series are nice machines and the one that the company that I
worked for last year (Dow Chemical) provide for our use. Better than
most other PC on the market out there but we did have a high number of
disk drive failures and battery failures with these units, maybe close
to 15% of the 10000+ that the company leased. Overall we got fairly
good service. As for pricing my new MacBook is in the same price
range and I can run both Mac & PC at the same time on my machine. I
can be in the PC world if I need to be for business purposes.

Agreed. I'm Microsoft certified and I use Macs at home.

When asked what laptop to buy I always ask first - how big - then -
how much $$.

Many coworkers flocked to buy cheap NETbooks only to be dissatisfied
with the small keyboard and screen. I find them to be useful but not
as a primary laptop. I might keep ours in the coach since it has a
solid state drive and WinXP.

If the budget is there I always recommend a Mac. It's pretty self-
serving because I never hear back from them with issues. PC users
always have questions. Macs just work.

Having said that I'm currently typing on, and frequently use, my
iPhone for mail, Internet browsing, maps, etc.

I guess it really comes down to what you want and want to spend. I have bought lots of Dells for my clinic, and have an Inspiron laptop at home that keeps on chugging along (I am running Wimdows XP on all of them, it seems pretty problem-free). My wife and kids all have Macs, and love them. If I could use them at work, I would as well. It seems that Bill Gates and company have done their best to try to do as good a job as the MacOS does, but the fact that every year or so a new version comes out makes you wonder about their ability to do so.

I started in the microcomputer business in 1986 selling IBM and Apple. In
1991 our dealership dropped IBM even after all the staff had been trained
for the PS-2 line and OS 2 (which was a great OS for it's time).

I've always preferred the Mac. Does a Mac cost more? It depends on how you
look at it. In 2002 I did a TCO study comparing Mac's to HP/Dell systems. It
involved large institutions that had an installation of no more than 40% of
Macs or Windows computers. Here were the facts back then.

- Cost of support for manpower was much higher for Windows PCs
- Cost of repairs was much higher for the systems built to run Windows
- Task of keeping replacement parts was also more expensive for HP/Dell
- Lifetime (replacement) was six years for Mac, four years for HP/Dell

Now, to compare the up-front purchase cost, be fair can compare similarly
equipped systems. It isn't fair to compare a Yugo to a BMW and it isn't fair
to compare a stripped-down CPQ computer to a MacBook Pro. They aren't
anywhere near similar.

Throw out purchase price and you save money with a Mac. It was that way in
1995 when the same organization did a TCO (total cost of ownership) study.

Of course, if you buy a PC and something happens, you can always find a
neighbor that thinks he can fix it. We Mac users don't have those kinds of
neighbors. Which is probably another reason why we like our Macs.

I have never met someone that switched and went back because they wanted to.
I have met users that switched because some bureaucratic organization with
IT people creating problems so they can keep their jobs made them do it.

Do I have a bias. You bet. Do I have a reason. Absolutely.

By the way, I worked on DOS 2, DOS 3, Windows 1.x (before anyone heard of
it), Window 2.x (while it still couldn't handle memory), Windows 3 (closer),
Windows 95 (getting better), Windows 98 (reboot daily), Windows XP (protect
thyself), Vista (what for?), and Windows 7 (finally, and how long did it
take?). I didn't mention Bob or ME. As I said earlier, OS 2 was a great
environment. Microsoft killed IBM for trying to make a go with it and break
from the MS strangle hold.

Dang, I'm getting old. Just not as old as CPM Henderson...yet.

After years of fighting PC's, I switched to a Mac. It cost a bunch more but I've had no virus problems and no hardware issues. It (MacBook) came with all the software I need and it's all integrated to work seamlessly together.

Rob,
I am just about there myself. After being forced to use VISTA, and
as you say, the constant nagging by anti-virus programs, my next
computer will be a MAC. I refuse to get sucked in to yet another BS
windows program

Better to buy an iphone, -- it sucks as a phone, but it is just an excellent
device,a really cool tool.

get used to words like - dual boot - windows emulator - new OS version, (so
you can have software to run), Don't buy an old model MAC.

remember your computer guy is a MAC guy running PCs because there is no
support for his software/hardware.

We need APPLE, there needs to be competition, three of my best friends are
APPLE phreqs. It is real hard to pick on me ;>) So spend some money on
their new models.

See you at Mac World in Feb. ( wait, why did APPLE drop out of Mac World?)
do they still sell computers? sure they do, I think. I will be there, "the
last computer show" - even tho there are no computer companies there.

See you-all there?

I have been a PC user for a thousand years. My daughter is an Apple addict and she bought a Mac Book for my grand daughter for school. She did have a Mac Mini. The two grand sons both have Mac books and in the house they have three IMacs. She has told me to get away from MicroShaft for years.

Well she sent me the grand daughters Mac Mini I have been using it for about two months now and would not go back. Blue tooth key board and mouse, WyFi in the box called Airport. My next desk top unit will bean IMac. Older hardware I had that would not work on Vista works on the Mac. Plug into the USB and go. Even with the Apple missing a Byte (look at the logo) I love it.

My just bought Mac Book Pro and my sister who lives next door just bought a IMac 27. They both say they would not go back to Micro Shaft.

My daughter lives in San Diego and said a PC makes a good small boat anchor. My sister, son and I live in New York so the cult is moving east.

February, in San Francisco.
I will not go there. I will wait til after you and Gene go there and
then you can tell me what to buy. Simpler. Still haven't gotten my
computer back from the Geeks. They need to reflash the bios, but
first they had to contact Gateway to get the software. Maybe today or
tomorrow.

Steve, we have just gone back to a Mac and love it, last time we used
them was at work and at home was 1995, they have changed and are real
nice.

We have been attending the MUG classes that are free and the
membership is $20.00 a year. There should be a MUG users group near
you also. There are tons of free software for them also.

We bought a MACBOOK PRO, with snow Leopard operating system.

Gene, I think Woot changed that page.
(Woot.com is a great source; new item every night at 10pm)

Were you pointing to a netbook? I bought the Acer Aspire One
(model number AOA 150-1126, which is also know as ZG5)
with XP about a year ago and love it.
It weighs less than 3 pounds!

The keyboard is large enough and has everything except
a CD slot (buy a external one for $90).

Great machine for around $300 w/extended battery.

hard to beat for the price.

have to say, I have become addicted to wireless mouse and Keyboard, (may be
because I am too messy to keep a clean desk, but now have them on all of my
computers ;>)

sick I know, but am asking for them for xmas.

hope you are all doing well and have a great Holidays.

also

I am trying to get my gdaughter to go to Chico next year, where her folks
did,
