Installed the seat base plates tonight. What fun. There is always something in the way. This time it was the exhaust pipe. I'll probably put a shield to keep the bolts from getting hot as they are just inches above the pipe.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=31990

Also finished my waste piping. I set it up for regular dump, and will add a macerator later. Does anyone have the total length of the macerator itself, not including the fittings? I think it will fit between my sanitary tee and the frame crossmember just ahead of the geneset. It should nest nicely there. Just need to get a bayonet fitting and a cap and it is done.

I did not valve ahead of the macerator, do you guys have a valve there? I do have room.

I also made an extender for the slide valve and put a hole in the frame to allow the handle to be right under the battery tray in the genset compartment.

Chris, I can't tell just how you have things under there. I would put a shut off at the tank. Should you need to work on the maserator, and you will, you can shut it off and have a cleaner work spot. Also, on mine, if I leave the gate open at the tank it will leak past my maserator and into the hose. I have a 12 volt gate at the tank and a manual one on the pipe that I hook my 3 inch hose onto, if I need it. I always keep both gates closed until I need them open.
I can't wait to see all of your work at Quartzsite. I am very anxious to hit the road. Only 1800 miles to Quartzsite.

Chris,
I agree that this layout could possibility have problems. Without the
valve at the tank you could have a solids build up issue in the piping
also along with the possible leakage issue. The installation of the
WYE instead of a T is good but in your layout the solids have to make
a 270 deg turn to get back to the macerator. As a suggestion I would
move the WYE closer to the tank and turn it around to take the
restriction out of the line. That way the flow only has to make a 45
deg turn into the macerator. It also appears that you haven't a means
to take the piping apart in case you get a clog or jam. You might
want to put a couple of rubber hubs in for easy of disassembly and
cleaning.

I just went out a took some quick pictures of the existing system that
is in our 77 coach just to show a typical installation (installed in
2001). Notice the straight run from the tank to the rear of the
coach. Less 90's are better as they make the piping think it is
longer and slows down the flow. Each 90 adds approximately 15 feet to
the overall effective length of the run.

Chris, you did not ask for suggestions but you know that is what we do here. We tell guys how to do things, "right". Very Happy
Simple is good on the maserator install. Teri has our camera, taking pictures of a new grandchild, or I would send you a picture.
Mine is like this:
A valve at the tank, 12 volts.
Straight 3 inch, toward the rear, with a 45 off to the driver's side. Maserator is in that 45 with a hose through the frame and a connector like JR has on his hose. Straight out the rear is a valve, past the maserator "turn off" and near the end of the pipe. I can open both valves, remove the cap, and shoot water straight into the tank if I want, even though I have a cleanout sprayer. Straight is good when dumping what comes out of that tank.

Thanks guys, I actually did want suggestions. I do have another gate valve that can go at the tank.

Also, I do have a rubber coupling in there for disassembly.

I was planning to put a valve ahead of the macerator as I was worried that goo would seep through it anyway.

I hadn't really considered solids clogging the pipe while sitting. I will put that other valve in there.

As for the reverse Wye, I'm not to concerned about that as the pump will pull the waste towards it, and I can drop the rear of the coach if need be. Some guys seem to have their pumps pull up a few inches...

Chris,

If you haven't done so already do a search for "macerator" on the photo site
and you'll see some examples.

I have looked at them all. Some are good, some have too much "external view" for my taste. If I could dig a trench under my coach to hide the drain pipes, I would... I also left the space to the right for another tank or spare tire or something (although I think the spare would hang down too low). I may also put a skid plate across the entire space, easily removable, of course, and with drain holes.

Does anyone know the length of the pumps? I think both main brands are about the same.

Chris, the length will depend on which input you use. I use the 3 inch so mine is shorter than those using the 1 1/2 inch input.

Chris

I have a Johnson Pump macerator. I picked it up new at an estate sale for $8.00 It is a 1.5" inlet model that is 260mm total length. I have not had any problems with plugging but if I had to buy one new I would go for the 3". The parts list drawing also shows dimensions if you need other info.

Chris, I have the Jabsco. I also carry a spare one. The only spare part I have in the coach now. Last year mine froze up and Jim K. sent me parts to rebuild it. There are other brands but this is the only one I am familiar with. Easy to work on.

Hmmm... So I have looked at that one, and I am guessing that the body is the same OD as a 3" ABS pipe and you used a rubber coupling to connect it leaving the 1-1/2 inlet inside of that? If so, what about the bolt heads? are they in the goop?

Chris,

I also use a couple of 3" Jabsco macerators. But I'm not sure they're
still made -- I can't find them on the Jabsco web site. That's not a
problem if I need a direct replacement, however. The only difference
I've seen between the 1-1/2" inlet models and the 3" models is that
the 1-1/2" one has the 1-1/2" straight/threaded extension on the 3"
housing -- cut that extension off and you have a 3" inlet. Just
secure the 3" hose on the 3" OD of the plastic housing. The inlet to
the chopper blade is the same side on both.

Chris, just like Ken stated. I use a rubber fitting to hook the Jabsco to the 3 inch pipe. I am looking for a spare rubber connector now. Ken, do you still have that website that sells them? I had it in the laptop that crashed.
The rubber fitting accepts the maserator and fits over the 3 inch pipe. Bigger on one end.

Sorry, Dan, I don't have any such fitting; I've got some "picker hose"
from John Deere that I use for that purpose.

Chris,

Here's all the pictures you could ever want of a macerator innards:

Do an eBay search for Macerator and you'll get a half a dozen.
