Since I was sick for most of this year, I figured I'd take a trip.
Just me and a dog. After the Pismo Beach thing the week before
Thanksgiving with the GMC and buggy, the wife flew home and left me
with her dog (my dog was left home). I took off from Manteca, CA and
headed to Santa Clarita, CA to visit Dave, a fellow that is building a
buggy and needed a gas tank which I had brought along. I left there
and headed to Tucson, AZ and visited with a buggy fellow named
AzBullit. Had a blast bouncing around the desert for a day. Left there
and did some motorhome things for a week in the Tucson area, This
included hanging around with Steve and Nancy Ferguson (and Missy and
Max), going for rides in ALL of their great cars (can you say 55 Chevy
with a 4-speed), and attending the Sagurao Jetsetter Tucson rally
(that was FUN). Stayed in Las Cruces, NM last night at the Las Cruces
Airport where Hal Karding has his business. A fellow GMCer with 5
planes, one of which is a WWII fighter jet. Flies at 500mph and use
300gals/hour of jet fuel (holds almost 900gals). Beautiful, and sure
wish I could have fit in it. Not to mention the Buskirk Stretch in the
hanger. Just beautiful. Now the GMC, the Turista, the Dog, and I are
outside of Fort Stockton, TX. for the night in a rest area
(http://map.datastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=5449). On to San Antonio
tomorrow. I'm headed to Florida if possible. Might just make it to
Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama at the least. Hope to be back for
Quartzsite, but who knows...

Sounds like a great, relaxing, trip, Gary.

When you get to GA, be sure to visit us. We've got full hookups here
at the house and out at my aunt's 250 ac. country place. No dune
buggies but a JD Gator and a very early jeep with the steering column
sticking straight up from the front bumper. It'll scare you as well
as a DB. :-)

Hey Gary, great report. I sure hope you make Quartzsite with us. Teri and I will be there for 3 weeks. They have a great car show there the last weekend of Jan. I hope you are enjoying your trip, I know that you are. Can't wait to see you in Az. We can watch Barrett Jackson sale from the desert.

Gary,

I would be interested to know what WWII jet. There were only two to chose from, the Gloster Meteor and the Schwalbe(ME262/Swallow) and I didn't thing that there were examples of either in the hands of private collectors.

I didn't take any pictures of it, but Hal said they came out at the
end of WWII. It's a Canadian built 2 seat trainer. Hopefully someone
else will have the info. RobM has a picture of it. Can you ID it?

Thanks Rob,

I've always liked P-80s - so clean for the day. They did just barely miss action in WWII, but the production did start in 1944.

IIRC, F-80 was fighter version and T-33 was pilot trainer.

Hey,
I recognize that photo....I took it.
Hal would need to get the jet recertified and he told me it costs
$1,000 an hour to fly it. Not for the weak at heart or pocketbook.
What you can't see are the two B-25 bombers he also owns. That
Buskirk stretch is pretty awsome. Everything from the suspension,
frame work and incredible woodwork in the interior is well beyond any
GMC I've seen in person.

That plane was nicknamed the t-bird here in Canada.

http://www.warbirdalley.com/tbird.htm

I worked on the Nene10 engine when I first started working for Rolls Royce
24 years ago.

Canada took the t-bird out of service around 2000, so it has served a long
career as a trainer.

Well, had a GREAT time in Gautier, MS. Played with old Navy friends
for a week. Only went under 1 tornado watch the whole time, with one
day of rain added in to the mix. GMC is doing fine.Took care of a
pinging problem that developed (thanks SteveF for the hints). Wound up
being a loose distributor of all things. I left the dog alone in the
coach for a couple of hours, and he tore up every mini blind that we
had. So, Navy friend and I made new curtains and installed them. A
temporary thing until I get home so I can get new mini blinds. He's
now relegated to his kennel when I leave the coach. Sucks to be him.
Getting close to Montgomery, AL now, so will spend the night somewhere
between Montgomery and Atlanta. Will roll into White, GA on sunday.
KenH; I won't be going as far east as your place, but I really
appreciate the offer of staying with you. Also DavidG for his FL
offer. Looks like I'll be able to make it in time for Quartzsite if
the GMC keeps running. We shall see...

Gary,
I can appreciate how your enjoying the trip by yourself.
I love traveling across country alone. The 5 years driving from Idaho
to Oklahoma was the best time I remember.
Driving in the West is great.
It must be great to see your old buddies and for them to see you as well.
Be sure to return.
Take care.

Gary,

Sorry we'll miss you; I can imagine how tight your schedule is if you're
hoping to get back to Quartzite or I'd be pointing out how close I-85 will
bring you to us. Maybe next time.

Dave,

Be careful what you ask for! Some of us are discussing leaving Lazy Days
after the raillies there and heading for Key West. Our participation is
very iffy yet, but it could happen.

Ken H.

Great!

I can park at least 5 26' coaches or maybe 8 23'rs in my driveway.
I can dump if you have a long enough hose and a mascerator, water
aplenty and one 50A but several 15 and 20A available.

Dave,

IIRC, you're right about the number of sites -- I'm not sure we can open the
doors to get out though! :-)

Wonder what your golf cart driving neighbors would think if we convoyed that
many GMC's the mile (?) through the subdivision?

I'll keep you posted.

Jim,
I don't know how you can post that with a straight face.......I have
heard from reliable sources that you seldom travel without a state
trooper escort. Now, if you could just figure out where they're
coming from, you could visit with them on your terms :>)
