Thanks for the replys. Now I know!
Is there quick way to tell when reading the forum emails if they come from the email list or from forum replys?

Yes, The easiest way is to look for the lines below that the email list server adds.

GMCnet mailing list
List Information and Subscription Options:
http://temp.gmcnet.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/gmclist

If posting was generated on the Forum, the lines will not be there. If an emailer responds to a forum posting that does not have the lines, the lines will be added to the bottom of their response.

I have not made it down to Blaine's yet because I had to pull that cylinder a second time. It is just about all back together again. I just pulled all 4 valve covers tonight and bead blasted them. I'll paint them at home tonight and probably reinstall them by the week end. Then all I have left is to to clean 8 plugs and reinstall the cowling. It is 10 degrees outside and I'm working in an unheated hanger. So I quit for the night.

I'll probably be done and head that way sometime next week.

Ken,

Why'd you have to re-pull the cylinder?

Ken,

Why'd you have to re-pull the cylinder?

Ken H.

MY fault for not doing a complete job the first time. I found a broken ring so I just cleaned up the piston, the cylinder, honed the cylinder, and replaced the rings. I did not pull the valves and check them. After 2.5 hours of running it still was not up to the correct compression. So I pulled the cylinder a second time and found carbon impacted in the valve seat. After cleaning up the seat it still would not seal so I end up slightly grinding the seat and re-installing the valve. If I had bothered to removed the valves (which only takes a few minutes) when I had it out the first time I would have seen the problem.

Working on the cylinder is the simple job. Getting to it and getting it off it the PIA.

Too bad. It's always tempting to fudge a little -- usually to our
later regret. Like when I spun the rod bearing after 45 miles.
Instead of replacing the contaminated lifters, I disassembled and
cleaned them. It's an absolute miracle that they're all 16 working
fine 15k miles later. If one had collapsed, forcing me to tear into
the engine and spend the $50 for a new set of lifters I'd have really
been kicking myself. I was just luckier than you.
