Sometimes when I park on a slight grade and do not cock the wheels agains the curb the trans slips in park with a ratchet like motion "clunk clunk clunk" and sometimes stops. last time I had an auto tranny apart I know there is a metal latch type device that locks into teeth on one of the drums to prevent the wheels from turning when in park. it sounds like either the latch or something is not fully engauging, or worse might have rounded. anyone else ever have this problem?

I found that following the shifter linkage adjustment procedure in the shop manual fixed this problem when it happened to me.

It's not "all the way" in Park. Hydraulically but not mechanically (the parking pawl is not fully released to engage the external drum slots).

I had this same problem with our coach when we first got it and mistakenly assumed the parking pawl was broken.

When I changed the transmission fluid and filter, I examined the pawl and found it to be fine. The transmission had been shifting and operating correctly. The only problem was the pawl would not engage when the transmission was placed in park.

I adjusted the the transmission cable per the maint manual and it solved the problem. It doesn't take long to adjust. I think I had the inner fender well already removed at the time which made it a bit easier.

Most of the time the cable just needs adjusting. On a level surface,
get under the coach and reach the shift lever on the tranny. There
should be some kind of pin or wire holding the shift relay rod to the
tranny shift lever. Remove the pin or whatever is there. remove the
relay rod.Try to move the tranny shift lever down. If it moves or if
it moved when you pulled the relay rod out, it needs an adjustment.
The adjustment is on the rod swivel bolt. Loosening the bolt, the rod
can slide. Tighten the bolt after the adjustment.
Usually its moving the tranny lever down and the swivel toward the tranny.
It this doesn't make much since, call me.

Why didn't you tell me that when I had the problem?

NOOOOO......You made me go figure it out on my own.

That is exactly what I had to do to fix it.
